The Storytelling Ability of a Boy By Carter W. Lewis Directed by Anthony Rodriguez
In Storytelling Ability of a Boy, an idealistic young English teacher named Caitlin sees something special in the prose of her slacker student Peck. Her desire to cultivate his talent draws her into a compromising love triangle with his best friend, Goth-girl, Dora. This wickedly dark comedy will feature the beautifully haunting strains of live cello music to underscore the action. The play gives an uncensored glimpse into the emotional life of counter-culture teenagers in extreme situations, told with amazing humor and sensitivity by playwright Carter W. Lewis. The show will be directed by Aurora Theatre Producing Artistic director Anthony Rodriguez. The cast features one of the actors from the world premiere, Bethany Anne Lind (Buy My House…Please!, Aurora Theatre) who will reprise Dora, the role she created in the world premiere. Making their Aurora debuts are Nick Arapoglou (End Days, Horizon Theatre) as Peck and Suehyla El-Attar (Tennis in Nablus, Alliance Theatre) as Caitlin.
About the Playwright Carter W. Lewis received the Julie Harris Playwriting Award, the State Theatre's Best New American Play Prize, the 1996 and 2001 Cincinnati Playhouse Rosenthal New Play Prize, the 2001 New Dramatist Playwriting Award, the 2003 Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation Award, and he is a two time nominee for the American Theatre Critics Award. His works include Ordinary Nation, Art Control, A Geometric Digression of the Species, Soft Click Of A Switch, An Asian Jockey In Our Midst, The One-Eyed Man Is King, Golf With Alan Shepard, Picasso Does My Maps, Women Who Steal, Men On The Take, While We Were Bowling, American Storm, Kid Peculiar, and Civil Disobedience. Lewis is currently serving as Playwright-in-Residence at Washington University.
“Storytelling Ability was originally the show we wanted to use to premiere the GGC Lab Series because it shows the inextricable connection of educators and their students. Teachers are saving kids’ lives every day by pointing them in a good direction; challenging them to think. Sometimes, unfortunately, the lines get blurred, but we all still fondly look back at those teachers who took a bullet for us. This show is for those teachers and those teenagers,” explains Aurora Theatre Artistic Director Anthony Rodriguez.
